I have a 2001 Explorer 4WD 6 cyl auto that starts when cold but after warming up, will not restart if I shut it off and wait 5...10...15 minutes. If you pull into a gas station and go into get a soda you might be stuck until the engine cools off. It might restart if I shut it off and try to restart right away.

There are a number of these threads and when they say "won't start" they generally mean it will crank but not catch/run. In my case, when you turn the key from "run" to "start" the dome light goes out, the clock display shuts off and ...nothing. There is no attempt to crank. After a few seconds of holding the key in "start" the dome light and clock come back on and there is a constant tone. It's almost like you've removed the key by turning it to run but all the dash lights that were on from inserting/turning the key are still on.

This feels to me like something gets hot (heat soaked), expands and breaks contact somewhere...but where? It's not the relays in the engine compartment as I've swapped those, replaced them, etc. Although one summer the issue was fixed for the whole summer by replacing either the relay for the PCM or the ignition...I can't remember which.

For a time, when it would not start with the key, I was able pull the ignition relay and jump it using a short wire I had made as long as the key was in and at the "run" position. But now when hot even that method of starting won't help...in other words the problem seems to be getting worse as if a component is continuing to deteriorate.

I currently live in central NY and that means the engine usually cools down fairly quickly as opposed to the years I lived in northern CA where it could take hours before you could restart the car - sometimes we had to wait until after sundown.

I am going to pull the coil pack tomorrow and test with a volt-ohm meter (VOM) just to make sure it's OK.

Any one have any other thoughts...?

Had a very similar situation on my Sport Trac, it turned out to be the solenoid on starter motor. Replaced it and hot start (no crank) problems not occured again.
Make sure connections to solenoid are very clean and tight.
