Hey - I am new to the forum and love my 2001 Ranger 4.0 5spd automatic with 4.10 posi - it runs super with no real mods and only 65k on it and I have owned it since 20k and 1yr old. It has always performed excellent - 26.5mpg in 2wd highway and 20mpg in town. It always smoothly shifts, smooth 4wd low and 4wd high and 2wd operation except for recently. It has developed a difficulty DISENGAGING from any 4wd position. It has a twist type dial on the dash - not a push button. Tires are all the same with even wear, even pressure, etc... It will go in 4wd easily but when the time is done for 4wd it has started giving problems - first it was just once in a while now it is every time. I used to be able to turn hard to the left and it would go out of 4wd. Then it got worse and I would have to switch to 4wd low first then to 2wd to get it out. Then that stopped doing the trick and the only way to get it out is to shift in to 2wd and drive in reverse and turn the wheels. I am wondering if I need a new shift motor ($99 at AutoZone) or if there is another - hopefully cheap and easy fix?
