4wd not disengaging, brown wire mod no help

that's just a grease boot for the CV-joint.. ie, not a servicable CV-joint. You WILL need a new driveshaft.

Ok, I have the same problem. I thought it was the tcase motor, but I got it to wok in nuetral. Mine is a 97 eddie sohc 4.0. I don't know much about these explorers cause this is my first. I've had mine 7 mos now. I tested my tcase motor by unbolting it from the tcase and hot wiring it to the battery. It ran fine so that told me right away it wasn't the motor. So then I Left it unbolted from the tcase and plugged it back into the wiring harness. I went through the ranges with the switch on the dash and it wouldn't work. My neighbor told me to try shifting it in and out with it in nuetral. It shift into 4low and back to 4h but when I go to auto nothing happens. So, why doesn't it shift on the fly. Oh and it is deffinatly in 4h cause when I had the motor off, the selector on the tcase was on 4h. So I'm stuck now too. I refused to beleive it was the tcase up until now. It sounds like it might be in that clutch set up in the tcase. Something is'nt letting it shift out of 4h. Could it posibly be in the sensor that tells it when I lost grip and engages the front wheels?

Put the truck in neutral and shift to 4L. What am I missing?

Well that told me my switch is working. Where I thought that because it wouldn't switch through auto,4h, and 4L in park with the ignition on. I'm totally new to these explorers and electronic 4wd controls. I baught mine used 7 mos ago when I totaled my 89 ranger wich had all manual 4wd controls. I really think I'm like buckshot, I'm in denial and don't want to beleive its in the tcase. But as I read through the whole thread He did everything I thought of and some but still came down to the tcase. I've even baught the chilton book. I'm tryin to find more info on the "brown wire mod" also. Specifically how and why. That is the last thing I'm tempted to try before I give into the "single bullet theory" (the clutch in the tcase). Also I need some info on these referances to "atlas". Are these a differant tcase that can be used? I'll do a search on it.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Basically, if you cut the power to the clutch coil, either through doing the brown wire mod, or un-plugging the connector on the transfer case for the clutch coil (NOT the shift motor) and the 4wd stays engaged, I believe it would be safe to say that the transfer case clutch is stuck and needs to come out.

Still waiting for pics of the guts of one.... maybe I can add it to my list of winter projects?

ok, perfect. I'm going to try it today I'll just trace the wire up into the cab and cut it to see if it disengages and if it does then it seems the mod will be the order of the day. Thanks everyone for the help.

No need to cut it.... just un-plug it. If it was mine, I'd wait until it was functioning before trying to modify its function.
