Looking to replace only the parts shown here in gold:

Note that this is a Sport, with the deluxe console (radio controls and HVAC at the rear of the pedestal). Not sure if the construction is similar to the 4-door unit shown in the sticky.

I'm buying a used vehicle -- a gift for my college-aged daughter -- and these parts have been abused pretty badly in particular. Can they be replaced without ripping out the interior?

Those two parts snap right out- no tools necessary. The double compartment one pulls out first, then the rearward one. They are occasionally for sale on this forum or you can check a salvage yard.

Not trying to scare you, but a bit of a warning: Sports in particular are prone to rollover from abrupt steering maneuvers or taking corners at speed. Please make sure your daughter understands this, I have seen many sports wrecked in my hometown with young female drivers behind the wheel.

Thank you very much.

Yes, we had one of these before, and I understand the potential for rollover. We will spend some time with her to make sure she understands how it must be driven.

Mountaineer...the console in the 2001 Sport is like the one in my 2002 Sport...the thread you posted is not the same console. I believe ours is all one piece.

Cuprik...I tried pulling mine out a few weeks ago...there are suppose to be some snap clips (plastic tab molded into upper section) near the front, middle, and rear on each side at the seams with the lower panels. My Chiltons manual claims the upper and lower halves come appart by pressing in the top half. I was not successful in getting mine out..I think I broke one of the front clips, so I gave up on the task.

Good luck.

I realize the arrangement looks similar to the one in the sticky, but I have to agree it appears to be only a single piece. The console may not be exactly the same in the short-wheelbase version.
