2002 Explorer trans question

I am looking at picking up a 2002 Explorer with the v8 4wd and it needs a transmission. I want to try and find a low mileage used one before I go about having it rebuilt. I need to know what vehicles transmissions were compatible so I can get the right one. I have searched all over and can't seem to find anything that gives the info I'm looking for.

Just do a search on the trans you have they are 5r55s or 5r55w if I'm not mistaken, they are in 2002-2005 Mercury Mountaineers (4.6L) and some even in the 2002-2005 mustang gt (4.6L) also if I'm not mistaken again they would also be in the Lincoln Aviator years 2002-2005 (4.6L) model's as well.

To clarify, does the replacement transmission have to be out of a truck with the v8? Or are the transmissions in the v6 the same?

I was wondering the same thing and heard from a ford tech the v8 transmission's are a little more beefed up for the extra towing capacity and such since they are v8's so I would say it's safe to say you would probably want one out of a v8.
