Ok guy i have been having a problem starting my 02 explorer 4.0 it has 112390 miles on it. the problem is that over the past two days sometimes it dosnt want to start it just cranks and cranks and then it starts. and today i had to press the gas pedel to get it to start. i did a fuel pressure test on it last night and it got normal readings with the key on i got 50psi and with the enigne running i got 65 and then reving the engine it went up to 72 and stayed there i did a leak down test on the fuel pump for 5 mins it went from 72 to 65 is that bad i know there is a check valve in the fuel pump. There is no check engine light at all any help would be appreciated thanks zach:(

I have been having this same problem for about the last four months with my 2004 V6. It won't roll all the way over without hitting the gas pedal about once every two weeks. Someone suggested the idle air bypass valve or cleaning the mass airflow sensor. I haven't done either on my explorer but I use to clean the MAF sensor on my 94 Mustang to get rid of the rough idle.

I original thought it was something with the timing but the engine runs fine once its running and from what I've read after 2002 the death rattle is rare.

Anyone else got any other ideas?

When ive had to find the culprit for initial hard cold start i used a fuel pressure gauge and listened to trapped air in the rails. I also utilized the ‘turn key to run’ for 4 or 5 times letting the fuel lines and rails prime. That will tell you immediately if the pump/check valve are the problem because if they are, the truck will start right up.

i hooked up my code reader and got nothing no codes and the emissions system was fine. then just guessing i took a look at my pcv valve on it and sure enought it was stuck i replaced the pcv valve and it has yet to do it lol

I also have a 02 4.o eddie that cranks a lot before starting. it only does it once in a while. had my ford mechanic work on it and said he did a check on the fuel pump and Said the check valve was leaking a little which causes the fuel in the lines to drain back into the fuel tank.So when you go to start the truck it needs to pump the fuel all the way up to the injectors. The reason for the delayed starting.Said the fuel pump needs to be replaced. He changed plugs,PCV,Fuel filter which didn't help.is the check valve part of the fuel pump.Is it a pain to replace the fuel pump?

i wouldnt see why it would be hard i never changed the fuel pump on my explorer but i have on other vehicles its simple just drop the tank disconnet the lines take the old one out and put the new one it get a haynes manual it will take you step by step

well it started again i thought that pcv valve fixed it its done it twice now today i have to sit there and crank it over and over and press the gas till it starts up any ideas guys

so i hooked up the fuel injector tester and got a pressure of 15psi i did it three times and got 15psi and then i did it three more times and got 55 psi with the key on i tried it again to see what would happend and every time i did it i would get 55psi i could never get it to go to 15 again is my fuel pump starting to go bad? any help would be appreciated these intermittant problems are a pain!

Anybody have an idea whats wrong?

I would start with the pump relay or fuel filter. The pressure will not come down till you start or bleed off the pressure in that short of time

i changed the filter about 6000 miles ago do you think that could be cloged already i have already changed the relay. i cant get it to repeat the problem in a pattern its just competly random when it does it ill try both of them and see what happens it hasnt done it now in the past couple of days

2002 non starter

Engine cranks over
Fuel in tank
fuses ok
not sure about relays
changed 3 plugs on drivers side (easier) still nothing
have driven some long trips lately and everything was fine
HELP!!!

I'm having starting issues also. Just bought a 2006 Ranger and it was fine when I bought it. About 2 days after it doesn't wanna start. Takes 5 or 6 tries and then starts and runs fine.I changed the throttle positioning sensor. If you unplug the tps it start just fine but jumps to a high idol and then back down to normal then high again. plug the tps back in and it doesn't wanna start. It does it mostly when its cold. once it starts if you turn it off it will start right away. Leave it sit for an hour or so and same issue returns?! HELP
