I have a 2002 Explorer with about 78,000 miles. A couple of weeks ago, it was -2 deg F and when I drove off in the morning I heard a clicking sound coming from the 4x4 panel switch area. The transfer case tried to switch to 4x4 low without me pressing any buttons....not a good thing because it disengaged the transfer case and I was in nuetral. I pulled over and waited for the inside of the cab to warm up, and it went into 4x4 low. Switched it back to 4x4 auto and it was fine. But its not really fine because it happens again when its cold out.
I ordered a new control module but haven't received it yet. I hear that this is a common problem.
In the meantime while I wait for the part, I'm wondering if it would just stay in 4x4 Auto if I simply unplug the module? ...or will it totally screw up the transfer case. Anyone know?
Thanks.
