2002 key in a 2001?

Can someone who has access to both years of truck let me know if the 2002 key will fit in the 2001 ignition? The 2002 key is a little smaller then the 2001 key and the metal part of the key itself looks the same. I was going to buy a 2002 key and have it cut for my 2001 but wanted to be sure it would fit in the ignition. if someone could tell me it would be helpful. thanks

if the 2002 key has the computer chip (transponder) in it, i dont see why not.

yeah it does..I may give it ashot...I wuld loose $25 if it doesn;t work though so I didn;t want to just jump in head first

u can always ask ford.. probably just tell u that u cant cus itz not 98-01 though

the key can be cut to the same as your mechanically.... but the interior smartchips may not be compatible with each other.... why dont you just get a key for your model explorer? they cost the same.....

we have 3 98 and newer ford vehicles and I wanted my key to be different...my mom has a 2002 escape and the remotes and keys are exactly the same and my brother has a 1998 Contour SVT and his key is the same. i was just thinking it would be a way to make my keys unique.

they should work...... but i would check into the diagnostics of programming the smartchip transponder..... some oof them arent compatable with others i think....

i been thinking i could buy it and try to program the transponder first before I get it cut..then if it programs ok I will go get it cut..thatway if it does not program right i will just stick the key back on ebay for what I paid

Yeah, but how would you KNOW, if the programming worked unless the key is cut, and you see if it starts the vehicle?

I once read somewhere, that the 2002 and up models, have a different type of transponder, and it is not backwards compatible. But who knows. If it does work great. I do have to admit, that I like the new key style better! Let us know how is works out.

Does anyone know how to program a 1998-2001 key for their explorer? I need another key for my x and don't want to have to pay the dealership to program it for me.

Any help on that?

you must have 2 working keys to program a third. I think instructions are in the manual or you should be able to find them on this site using the search feature or e-mail a seller on ebay they all say they sell the key with instructions.

So if you only have 1 key you HAVE to go to the Ford dealership to get a second and third?

Also, does anyone know why my 1 key that I have now does not open my passenger side door? Any tips on fixing that?
