When turning right or left the car slows down and even comes to a stop we then have to hit the gas to push through it. How can we tell if this is the transfer case or the front drive shaft. We just bought the car and when we test drove it we did not cut any sharp corners so we never felt it.

it's not the front driveshaft. it's spinning and doing it's thing no matter which way the wheels are turned. your problem is coming from the rear differential. locate your axle code on the driver's side door. I bet it's probably d4. the binding, popping noise you hear during turns is caused by a limited slip rear differential that isn't slipping, so to speak. during turns your inside wheels turn at a different speed than the outside wheels. the job of a limited slip differential is to momentarily disengage the positive lock between the two back wheels during turns. when this fails, many symptoms occur but the most common are chattering, binding, whirring, and popping noises from a dead stop during turns. not cheap to fix. one thing you can try is what i did. i simply went to an abandoned parking lot and drove in a sharp figure 8 for about 10 minutes, went home, drained the fluid and refilled using Lucas synthetic gear oil with a sliplock additive, and called it good. it worked for me and might work for you. hope this helps.

Put a couple of tubes of friction modifier in the rear end. Then give it about a week of driving and see if that helps. Mine did the same thing not long after I bought it. Also, check tires for even wear front to back. I found out the other day that a slight difference in tires will make these things bind and make all sorts of noises. I put new tires on the front last spring. My problems started after that. I put new ones on the back the other day and now all my problems are gone.

x2. that absolutely will cause binding as well and in severe situations, lead to components inside the transfer case to fail.

Thank you for all your help. Where can I get the slipcover additive. I looked at advanced and did not see it.

Thank you

You all have been great. I am going to. Start with the tires since the front ones are new and the rear are terrible. It did it before i replaced the fronts.
