Simple question. I'm asking in advance before I get around to the task within the coming weeks.

On the 2002 with drum brakes do the drums just pull right off or do I need special tools to get them to release? Several years ago on my old 2003 Ranger Edge I couldn't get the drums off and actually chipped a chunk off the drum when I used a 5lb. hammer trying. I let a brake shop do the rest of the work after the pent up frustration, so that's why I'm asking. Thanks in advance.

they may just pull off. if they're really worn, however, there may be a lip around that will prevent that.

make sure your parking brake isn't engaged, and if they're being stubborn, back the star wheel adjusters off. a little tap to slip them off isn't unusual, but gettin at it with a sledge shouldnt be necessary.

go for the full rebuild kit from napa, it's worth the extra time and money.

This and if the axle stub is rusty, heat and a few whacks with the BFH to break the rust free.

My biggest concern for the moment is a leaky axle / wheel bearing seal on the right rear. That same axle has a lug stud spinning in the flange due to overtightening. So, Motorcraft seal, Torrington bearing, and a brand new replacement axle shaft from rockauto, along with brand new Dorman studs (can you believe they are made in USA?), and new Motorcraft brake shoes are waiting to go in. I have no idea how much fluid has been lost over the last several months. I did a gear oil change soon after buying the truck in early 2015. No leak was apparent then. I just don't want to run into that same problem again where the drum doesn't want to come off. Thanks.

This pic from a few years ago when I was attempting to do rear shoes on my 2003 Ranger Edge. Nice chunk taken out of the drum.
