I have a 2002 Eddie Bauer 4x4 with the 4.6 and 103,000 miles. The truck had the classic symptoms of a converter problem (ie. it sounds like a diesel when accelerating and goes away at freeway speeds. The local shop as well as the dealer both confirm it is the converter. Now here is my question. The Torque converter is about $650 installed at my local shop. With most of the cost being labor to remove and reinstall the tranny, I'm at a cross roads. Do I just replace the converter and stop or do i go ahead with the tranny rebuild while they have it down. Or better yet do I do nothing and wait for it to get bad. Not really sure if the converter is a safety issue or not. It's more annoying else. My fear is that I dont do the tranny while it is down and then a few months from now it goes bad and Im paying the labor all over again. Please give some feedback. The truck shifts just fine.
