I put beautiful 18 x 8.5 inch tires & rims on my 2002 4x4 and now have a transfer case problem! After driving for a month with the new wheels I started to hear a metal rod hitting another metal rod/clanking sound coming from under the car. At first the noise did not occur often, but it got worse! My Ford dealer could not find the problem until I brought in the original wheels and switched them. Then the noise stopped. Ford believes the new larger wheel size caused the transfer case to keep searching/switching the Explorer's four wheel drive mode. Their suggestion was to talk to the custom shop that sold me the wheels and see what they would do and drive around on my old tires until there is a solution. Does this mean I am out the large expense for the wheels? I put a chrome grille and exhaust tip on the car and now the old wheels (with the lug nuts exposed) look funny. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? Ford said this problem was new and their research turned up no answers. Help!
