2002 Transfer case problems - My own thread

Any thoughts as to why my 2002 Explorer is going through it's 2nd transfer case? Could the clanging be a loose "U" joint?

Wow, where do you learn to do this rebuild yourself? How can a shade tree mechanic learn about how to properly rebuild an xfercase?

I've seen books and repair manuals for the transmissions, but not for the transfer-cases since they were not made by ford.

I have the same Explorer that you do. I have 77,000 miles on mine and it seems that I need to put in my 2nd transfer case. Have you had similar problems with your transfer case?

Dude, do you think I could just remove the transfer case and put in a 2WD driveshaft. The problem is that I have been layed off for over a year and I need the cheapest way to fix my truck. On top of that the 4WD drive button or module does not work and I don't have 4WD any way.
