Hey all, I have an '02 Limited Explorer with 92k that just Sunday started flashing the O/D light and showing "Check Transmission". It won't shift from 2-3 anymore. It has been driven less than 1 mile since. After doing some research and seeing good reviews on the Better Business Bureau for Cottman I had them come to my house and get it.

They called and said it is showing a P0733 and they would need to remove and rebuild it, it would be on avg $2200-2500 which includes $450 if they take it out and take it apart to see what's wrong and I decide to not do it.

It seems that they may have determined I need to have a rebuild based off the P0733 and nothing else. That seems a little odd to me. What do you think?

P0733 is first suggestive of a solenoid issue. It CAN also be related to internal issues requiring teardown, but the first thing any competent shop will do is to check out the shift solenoids - I'm betting you just have a bad solenoid. A new solenoid block can be installed for about $350 to $400.

Unless they tested the solenoids and found them all functional in addition to pulling codes - they skipped a step and like too many shops want to rush you into an expensive, and potentially unnecessary rebuild.

From other posts on the forum, it seems that a lot of these blocks start to develop problems at around 60k miles. It would make sense to replace the block since you have 92k, and now have a code.
