- 2002 XLS
First off, great forum folks! I have done a lot of searching through posts since joining, however I do have a few things I need some help with. Recently bought a 2002 explorer XLS. Being that my F250 has reached retirement, I was going to need a toy puller / winter daily driver. I swore there would be no 4-door’s for me, however it was a great deal and the darn thing has a stick.
Ok, now the ugly. Axle code D4 yep she has what seems to be the “problematic†3:73 LSD. On the way home yesterday after a turn I start to notice a nasty vibration with some sound from the rear end area. Seems most pronounced with a low speed 90 deg turn when in gear under power, coasting around a corner does not produce the same sound. Driving straight down the road seems to be normal other than some noise from the rear when highway driving.
Now the questions I have.
1. The “brown wire fix†for the 4X4 auto. Has anyone done this on a 2002 model? If so anything special to deal with or is it the same as the rest, take out the seat, find the brown wire, insert switch, etc? I am very interested in this change as having 2-Low on the boat ramp will be nice.
2. I got lucky in that the X is still covered by a Ford ESP (for a few more miles anyway). I am going to contact a dealer soon. From searching it would seem that I am not alone with this D4 axle and its “issuesâ€. Are there any TSB’s or such-like that directly relate to this? I saw something mentioned somewhere about a document # that stated engineers were working on the problem. I am thinking the date was 9-04 ish. Has there been some “final†resolution for this problem from Ford? Anyone know of this document number? I can’t find that bloody post now that I need it. I saw it at one point, when I “didn’t†need it
Basically what’s the latest poop on the 3:73 LSD problem? Being well informed when I go to the dealer can only help.
3. Recommended dealer in the Toledo Oh area? I don’t go see the dealers much. So I really don’t have a “relationship†with any in my area.
Thanks in advance!
