2003 Explorer Check Gauge light intermittent

The check gauge light comes on intermittently even after fill up. The needle drops below E
and the light comes on. Sometimes the needle returns to the correct level and the light goes out
or after cutting off and back on it will go out. I don't think it is the tank unit because it will read correctly
when I add gas. Any help would be appreciated. It does it any fuel levels.
 






Check gage (if equipped):
Illuminates when any of the following conditions has occurred:

• The engine coolant temperature is high.
• The engine oil pressure is low.
• The fuel gauge is at or near empty.
