My car is 4.6L V8 with 117,000 miles. It was driving great, no issues at all. I've gotten all the service done in the last six years at a Ford dealership. I went to get an oil change last Thursday and when I drove out it immediately started "shuddering" - it vibrates for a few seconds every 1/2 to 3/4 mile. On the highway, I was doing about 65 and it did this for about 15 minutes. Of course I called the dealership and they told me to bring it back. While driving to bring it back, the "check transmission" indicator goes on and the "O/D Off" light starts flashing. The dealership hooks it up to the computer, reprograms the transmission but it still happens. They told me the error code they got from the computer was "incorrect gear ratio". I assume this is just the biggest coincidence in the world since the car was running well when I brought it in.
My question is this -- how do I find it if I have to replace the entire transmission? Shouldn't there be tests done on it to see if it's something that would cost me less than $3,000? Should I bring it to a transmission specialist and let them run a diagnostic on it? You can see I am really at a loss of what to do. The car is running right now but has a hard time going from 25 to 40 mph without the rpm going high. I assume that eventually it won't shift.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
