2003 Transmission issues

I have found a 2003 Mountaineer that looks really good, V8. The problem the owner says is that it wont go in reverse, wont go in park and rolls if you try to put it in park. How likely do you think its just a shift linkage issue?

Goes forward fine.

Also says the O/D light flashes.

Not very likely. I'd stay away from that one. Shouldn't be throwing any codes if it were just linkage. Sounds like a solenoid at the very least or something very very big/bad at worst. Only way I'd be willing to get into that vehicle is if I were prepared to spend an additional $2-3K on a remanufactured tranny to replace that one as a worst case scenario.

Agreed. I wouldn't touch it unless there was money in the budget to cover a rebuild of the tranny. If you're willing to pull it yourself, a bench build might be the cheaper way to go if you really want that particular vehicle.
