My daughter has the above mentioned explorer and problem. She heard that it is a simple matter of replacing the abs sensor above the rear end. Are there more than one sensor, and will the sensor replm't take care of both light problems? Thanks in advance.............................

same issue here, its a "speed sensor" usually on the front wheels. every wheel has a sensor.

i have an 05' and have taken it to the dealer 4 times, each time a new sensor was installed. 3 fronts, one rear. started acting up at just 13K miles

on my '04 it was the Rear Sensor - there is only one for the rear on the top of the Diff.

Most likely one of three sensors. Just try cleaning them first. One on each front wheel and one in rear differential. All easy to remove and clean or replace. These are solid state, actual failure is not very common. Malfunction do to debri is much more common, cleaning cures this. The dealer will seldom clean, easier/more profitable to just replace. Beyond this, we're talking computers (3), multiple relays and sensors. If both lights are flashing she most likely has no 4X4 or ABS function. Clean all three sensors and the tone rings on the front wheels. Let us know if this helps.

Abs, 4x4 flashes and loud grinding from front end!!!

We had the same problem except the only difference is our explorer sounds like grinding metal and the steering wheel "floats" from side to side. Any thoughts?

I have just started having this same problem over the last few days. How do we go about cleaning the sensors?

The ABS sensor is magnetic, so it will attract metallic fragments. Wipe the tip of the sensor with a tissue or a paper towel.

Thanks Brooklyn. I'm going to do that right now.

Was anything caught on the tip of the sensor?

Only checked the rears. Lots of metal shavings and dirt. Cleaned them up and it's still doing it. I'm getting the codes pulled this morning. Will update when done. (because you know il be here figuring out what the codes are and how to fix it ;) )

To the OP, I suggest getting the codes pulled. I just got back from the shop and as expected its sensors. Nice thing is I now which one(s). My codes were as follows:

C1234: RF wheel speed sensor input missing
C1175: LR speed sensor input circuit fault
U1900: ABS communication error
B1676: Battery voltage out of spec

So now to fix it all...

Just cleared codes and replaced the battery. It re-coded after about 30 seconds. Only code this time was C1234, missing input at the front right corner. So now I know what needs to be done next.
