Yesterday my wife was driving her 2004 Ford Explorer. When she was about 1/4 mile away from home, and pulling up to a stop sign the engine started shaking violently, and she was barely able to limp it home.
A friend of mine used a scan tool and the code given was for a misfire on cylinder # 3

I replaced the plugs and wires first as they were the originals anyway and the truck has
95,000 miles. ( This did not help.)

Today I did a compression check and the results were not good.
Cyl. # 1- 175psi. #2- 200psi. #3- 0psi. #4- 160psi. #5- 185psi. #6- 75psi.

Any sugestions on what the problem may be?

Thanks, Jason

timing chain???
#3 and #6 bent valves?

timing chain???
#3 and #6 bent valves?

yeah I would have to agree...

you may want to start looking for a donor engine from a salvage yard..

If this is a timing chain issue would the engine still run?
It will start and run but idles very rough.

There are only a few things that can cause loss of compression and none of them are good.
1) hole in piston (running too lean/hot)
2) bent valves (caused by piston to valve contact)
3) cracked head (you would usually see water in oil, oil in exhaust, etc...)
4) broken connecting rod (not your issue as the engine would make a horrible hammering sound)

either way you slice it on these engine when you have a loss of compression it needs to be torn down and rebuilt. Since it is much cheaper to get a low mileage donor from a salvage yard does it really matter what caused it? There is nothing cheap you can do to get your compression back. My guess is your timing chain is jumping teeth so in short order if you continue to run the motor it will chew up the rest of the valves.

sound like it dropped a valve and some debris got into #6 either way your looking at anew motor not cost efective to repair this one

I took it to my my uncle last night for further diagnosis
Thanks for the help.
I will post what happened

Good luck, hopefully we are all wrong, and it will be an easy fix. Provided your compression tests were on the mark it just doesn't sound good...

Yup it dropped an intake valve in #3
We replaced engine with used engine that has about 70,000 mi.
$ 2,000.00 installed not to bad.
Thanks for the help.
