Driving last night, cruising at about 45, I hear a slight pop, feel as if the the timing retarded alot, at first thought maybe I blew a tire. And then the dash lite up like a christmas tree, and the engine slowly stopped moving . no power. coasted to a stop. Tried to start it. It will spin and spin fast. But not even a bump of compression.
So my question is. Does a 97 SOHC V-6 have one timing chain for the cams or two. I can't imagine I blew two head gaskets at the same time, or broke two timing chains at the same time.
Any ideas out there?
Thanks for the advice.

Not sure, But there is no compression in any cylider right now. Almost like taking the spark plugs out of all the cylinders then hitting the starter.
Unfortunately I am swamped until sunday before i can dive into it.
Maybe an explorer with brand new 32 inch bridgestone duelers on craigslist soon...

Oh my, sounds like a timing chain to me, not sure about the compression however, not all cylinders should have both valves open or closed....

Dont bump the starter if the timing went south.......

Sounds like it's already too late....

If it spins like there's no compression, there very well may not be. Only a compression test will show it. I'm guessing that's going to be your problem though.

If you've got no compression, it's time to pull the valve covers and see what's up. Keep us posted and let us know what you find.

And now I know whats wrong. The timing chain tensioner snapped off (the first pop)and broke everything in the timing gear area including the gears and chain. Then there is the fact that the motor is an interference motor which means the pistons have hit the valves and may have knocked them to hell and back.
Crap. Anyone want to buy a 97 explorer sport with 32 Bridgestone MT on them? Less than 2500 on the tires!!! Anyone...Anyone...

Oh I think I realized the no compression part. Bang a valve and bend the stem, No ability to close fully. Hence no compression. Crap.

How much for the truck?

Thought they fixed this problem a long time ago, or was that only for timing belts.
