ok i have googled this and have came up with 2 different answers, did the 04 xlt v6 come with mercon or mercon 5? I have read conflicting info and am more confused now. What did ford put in from the factory in 04? I dont have an owners manual or i would have looked their! Thanks

i have 3 variations of this same transmission and i have used mercon v in all of them. but i have also removed all 12 1/2 quarts not just a pan drop filter and fill..

The reason you're seeing two types is because being a 4X4 it requires two different types.

The TRANSMISSION requires MERCON V only.

The TRANSFER CASE requires regular MERCON only.

I would only use Motorcraft Mercon V: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/MOT0/MERCONV/N0471.oap

if you must save a buck, Valvoline: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/VAL0/MERCONV/N0471.oap

Here are all the fluid specs:

When it comes time for coolant/antifreeze use only one of these two:
