2004 Mountaineer - Cruise control on s wheel doesn't engage

is there a way to determine if it's the switch, as there are none of my type on Ebay and new ones are $160. Thanks

Tried to warn against routine replacement of parts based on heresay, but.....no SEER am I, beenm wrong. The "9 times out of 10" prediction gave me a chuckle, though. Now, yeah, you can check the friggin' steering wheel switch easily using a VOM, (Volt-Ohm-Milliameter), to determine if the "ON" switch is defective, or any of the others. All ya need is wiring diagrams, a good meter, and uncanny interpretive abilities. I have the former, not the latter. imp

I drove it tonight and the "on" and "off" buttons are the only switches on both sides of the steering wheel that do not light up, so there appears to not be any current getting to them. I have used the cruise so little, when the cruise is turned to "on", is there an indicator on the dash?

Once it is on mine has a small green indicator light that lights up

$20 on a new brake pressure switch is not going to break the bank with the part replacement, not to mention it will probably go bad eventually. My experience with the cruise control not functioning is the brake pressure switch if the part were $50+ hey I would say review and take a closer look, just my 2 cents, but if you understand how to use a multimeter and check for resistance and continuity and tracing out wiring I would say take a look at all those factors.

Also 1coolguy it's called a cruise control switch for your vehicle, (brake pressure switch for my Ford Explorer), same part just slightly different name. Autozone sells your switch for $48 sorry I don't know if you have a V6 or V8 or if it's flexfuel, just look it up under your specific model and you will find it.

Imp.....no disrespect about the solution, some members I can tell do not have a lot of experience using multimeter or troublshooting with resistance and finding continuity. I try to find the easiest solution to the problem although I am not always right. I will be the first to admit. Have a good one!

Did you ever solve the problem? I have the same issue with an 02 Explorer. if it was the BPS wouldn't the light still come on with the on off switch from the steering wheel? Is there some sort of switch on the pedal?

I never solved it - All the fuses are good and I replaced the BPS.I have not had the steering wheel switched checked out yet.

My explorer had the new BPS and dual permanent fuse safety harness installed and my cruise was acting funny... Took my switches apart (actually really easy to get them off the steering wheel. Just be gentle around the air bag, I'd hate to have that go off...) and found the gold plated contacts to be dulled (corroded/oxidized) and the especially the contacts on the push buttons them selves to be worn away.. I cleaned it all up and used some thermal compound or never seize (both are conductive) and it worked great for a month, then started acting funny again. Only now once in a rare while will coast speed up and the accelerate hardly ever works... So maybe this will help, I just need to order new push buttons as my boards are fine.

Oh, the reason why the steering wheel buttons (along with many other buttons in Fords) act strange with age is because Ford uses Resistive Values for the functions. They generally just have two or three wires for many buttons and rely on specific resistance values to correspond to the button pushed...

i replaced my switch, and nothing. I replaced the cruise control module also, and the bps has continuity.
