2005 Ford Explorer XLT
Ok, I know there are a lot of threads about the subject, but it always seems in involves something like ABS but mine doesn't.

I have a 2005 XLT with 4wd. No warning lights at all, 4wd works find....but when I press the "ON" button on the steering wheel I get nothing; no indicator light or anything and I've held the button down for a few seconds and don't even get a light flicker or nothing like other people.

I have tried checking as many fuses as I could be got tired of basically standing on my head to look under the dash.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try or what specific fuse it might be (assuming it might be a fuse)? I have read it might be the actual switch for the cruise but I would hate to pay for a new switch and go to all the trouble replacing it only to find out that wasn't the problem. Would anything show up on OBD if I took it to Autozone or something to have it checked?

I almost go nuts without cruise control plus I like my cars to be in excellent tip-top working order so I want it fixed JUST because it's suppose to work more than anything!

Thanks a lot guys and I hope I can get this figured out soon!

So not only are you not getting a light, the truck is NOT going into cruise?

that is correct Verno...no light turning on indicating cruise is turned on and while driving it doesn't activate cruise either. While driving I've tried pressing on and tried setting a speed, tried resuming a speed, everything...no dice! :(

ok...update:

I have checked all fuses under dash and under hood (nothing wrong with any of them)
I have checked all warning lights (NO warning lights are on at all)

I have a couple of things that I think MIGHT be the cause and wonder if anyone might agree.

My EX has an aftermarket remote start/alarm system installed. One of the safety features of this system is that after remote starting, if you are to hit the brake pedal (to try shifting into gear) without the key inserted, it will cause the engine to shut off. Upon looking under the dash at the brakes, the remote start has been spliced into the wire harness for the brake pedal......could this possibly be causing the cruise not to turn on?

Also, I still haven't checked the buttons for the cruise that are on the steering wheel. It looks like they are in perfect working order and they press like they should, but that doesn't necessarily mean the electrical part of the buttons isn't shot. I don't know the first thing about using a voltage tester or how to even try testing the buttons so this is last on my list to check. :(

Is there a certain way to take off the buttons on the steering wheel without risking setting off the airbag? I don't want to get a face full of airbag just trying to test the cruise buttons.

Let me also note......when i say the cruise doesn't turn on, I mean not even the green? light on the dash indicating it's turned on. When I press the On, Set, Resume, etc. NOTHING happens and NOTHING indicates anything is going on with the cruise.

Cruise control not working

I have the same issue with my 2002 EB. None of the buttons on the steering wheel seem to do anything, no lights come on and cruise does not engage.

First message here. Anyways, when mine did that it was the switch under the dash that senses when you touch the brake pedal and deactivates the cruise control. I have owned several Explorers and have bought two of these switches in the past. I guess they just start to stick a little. It does not require much for them to turn the cruise off. Test this next time its working and see how light you touch the break pedal before it's off. Anyways, this has been my fix twice.

Thanks for the input, I will test this.

For my truck, I have to press ON and then - (Cst/Minus)

I used to use + (Set/Plus) but it stopped working. The Cst/Minus button requires like 2-3 presses before it works.

Probably a similar problem.

Does your EB have the adjustable pedal option?
My '05 Limited does.
on another thread it was suggested that the cruise control deactivation switch is actually under the dash at the pedal rather than under the hood on the master cyl.

The sw. on my master is facing downward so I have not been able to get to it though I have also not been able to find out if it is N/O or N/C until brake pressure is applied.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

I don't have the adjustable pedal. I haven't had a chance to look for the switch yet. I have been at work constantly over the holidays.

My problem solved
guy who just installed remote start pulled out a wire at the BPPS (under dash)
this sw & wiring directly affect cruise
dealer is fixing at his cost - wire was actually pulled out of the metal spade lug

not sure if this pertains to you but there is a recall that has to do with the cruise control and brake fluid. recall number 09s09. look up your vin on ford.com and see if this might help you. it isnt exactly your problem but maybe you had the problem and this is the aftermath. hope it helps

on my wife's Monty ('04) the cruise randomly won't "set". Tapping the brake pedal a couple times while driving (obviously careful of traffic around us) & the cruise will engage.

Its almost like the brain for the cruise is sticking or thinking its already on. A couple taps of the brake pedal always resets the cruise brain & works fine.

It's likely the brake switch itself. IRRC there was a design change on the switch to reduce that problem. I'm sure there is a thread on this forum about the new switch.

Any forum member can explain better what was done to solve this problem?
I do not understand what the burrcor explained.
The cruise control on my 2005 Ford Explorer Limited have the same symptoms and I can not solve.
Nothing happens when I trigger the steering wheel buttons, simply nothing.
I really need you to help me, here in my country are few units of the Ford Explorer and will not do it without your help.
Thanks in advance.
