I have a 2004 ranger 4x4 with the turn switch on the dash. If I put it into 4 high it seems to engage but I get a slight pull to the right and it seems like only the right side is engaged then after a few minutes I get a clunk and the left side seems to be engaged and the right pulls goes away. Then at no certin time it clunks again and the right side pull is back again. Sometimes after a stop it also seems to be whinning and more noisy and seems like it is stuck in a lower gear in the front.
Yesterday it did not want to come out of 4 high even though the light was off and I pulled over stopped and then started driving again and it was still the same, turned off the engine and waited for 5 minutes and it was fine and running in 2wd again.
The main concern is the clunk and how it seems to be engaging but the falling out. It seems to be the drivers side that is doing this!
Any help would be appreciated! I am not a mechanic and don't have much knowledge about 4 wheel drives.
