I bought a 2004 Ranger in 2010. My first ford ever!! Its your basic pick up without the bling. Standard transmission, 5 speed, 2 wheel drive. Recently I put my truck back in he shop for the third time for the same issue.
My problem stared awhile ago when I noticed the engine overheat light would come on while driving on I10 going speeds of 75-80 mph. Being tight with a buck I very rarely run the AC, so count that factor out. Once I saw the light I would back off on the speed and the light would go out and the gage would go back to normal. As long as I maintained slightly lower speeds all was good.
I took the truck in the first time to see if they could explain to me what this was and if it could be fixed. I also had oil change, tune up etc. I was told the water pumps weren't good in that model so that was changed as well as new gasket. They flushed the coolant system, all new fluids throughout. All was good. Truck hadn't run that great in awhile. Gas mileage was up 50 miles to the tank.
Another trip to Phoenix a week later and I don't have to wait to get to I10, now the light has come on at 65 mpg. RPMs went down after the first visit so 65 was all I had to get to. Second visit, they realized the radiator is almost clogged, 60 degree difference from top to bottom. Now I have a new radiator. Again, running good.
Third trip to Phoenix last week, I am praying to get at least to I10 without the light coming on and the gage going hot. NO SUCH LUCK!!!! Guess where the truck is now? No sh++t In the shop again.
Have any of you dealt with this problem? Where do they look now? The mechanics are a bit stumped. I have a trip to Flag coming up midweek, would love to drive my own vehicle.
Don't get me wrong, the ford guys have been great but this is getting OLD.
