04 Explorer, 94 XLT (RIP)
Hey guys,

Just brought home a new-to-me 2004 XLT, to replace the 1994 XLT. Today is definitely a bittersweet day!

Anyway, I did a search and didn't see an answer to this problem. I didn't notice on the test drive (of course), but the #3 and #4 preset buttons on the stock 2004 radio don't work. Everything else seems fine. The radio has a single CD player, and doesn't sound that great when cranked up, so I doubt it has much in the way of good speakers, amps or subwoofers.

Any ideas on how to fix these buttons?

If not, I do have a brand new Pioneer HU that I can take from the 1994. Any suggestions for face plates and subwoofer setups for the 2004?

Mike

check and see if yours comes with a opptional sub. my 03 does and it is suposed to go on the back right side. if u are only thinking of a 8 inch sub it might fit there.
good luck.

OK, this makes no sense...

The #3 and #4 buttons started working today, two weeks after I bought the truck (they haven't been working up until today).

Anyone have ideas about this? I know that the two early-90's Fords I owned (Sable and Explorer) had sticking/non-working button issues...

And now, they're working intermittently...

Gimmee a second...

Overheating...

Mine kept overheating and the buttons would do weird things... the cost to replace it was not worth it... Here is how I fixed it: I put it in a box and replaced it with an aftermarket that actually works... I don't mean to sound smart@$$, but mine kept doing strange things too... It's easier to replace, and if you like your cds, get a reasonable one w/iPod attachment and you never have to mess with cds again... :salute:

They are a flawed brand of stereo... I think it's in the second red box down :)

Thanks, that's what I did with my 94 Explorer (the box I put it in was green and plastic, and went to the curb).

I just can't believe that after all these years, for a vehicle that sells for over $30,000 new, they can't make a radio that lasts more than 3 years...

Both the 96 and the 03 did that...

What did you get? Both vehicles had that issue, but this time I took time looking for an h/u that would last for a while, but not cost too much... The iPod idea came from the guys at Staples. I was looking for an adapter, and they said just go for a new unit... :D

Every Ford I've owned had a sucky factory unit- '84, '92, '93, '02(x2), '06, and my '08 will be alright until I can get the Alpine IVA-W205 or the Kenwood 8019 in there. Most of mine ate CD's except the '06. The face would quit and the volume would change on its own (with the speed control OFF). Also, that one was only in the car for about 4 days. Garbage.

For the 94, I put a Pioneer CD deck (3900, I think), with the Pioneer iPod adapter (though I never got around to trying it). I also put in 4 Pioneer speakers. It sounds OK, could definitely use some amps and a woofer, but it's light years better than the stock "Premium" system that came from Ford.

If you have time/desire to do a search, I posted on here exactly what models I used at the time (over this past summer).
