Hi everyone.
Recently bought a 2004 Explorer Limited 4x4 V6 (K-Flex Fuel) and towing package. It has 70,000mi and runs great. I just upgraded from a '91 Explorer XLT 4Dr 2WD with a 5 speed. I am posting because my new one is getting incredibly awful fuel economy. My old one would get around 15 in the city with mediumly aggressive throttle usage, and would consistently get over 20 mpg on the highway, up to 75mph! If I kept it under 70 I would get even higher mileage. The 2004, however, is a different story. If I set the cruise control at 70mph and hit reset on the in dash MPG reading and go for many miles without stopping and on relatively flat ground I'll see about 17-18. If I make ANY stops, even if the average has been for 20 mi or more, it'll drop back down to 16 or so. With a mixture of 2 lane highway driving at 55 and spaced out stops and lights and such, I have been averaging 13-14MPG! Just to compare, my mom has a 2006 2WD that shows 22 on the dash with the exact same driving (and me driving it). I'm sorry but 4x4 doesn't affect mileage THAT much.
It has a K&N air filter (new), this mileage is from "normal" driving habits (not excessive acceleration or flooring it). Yes the tires are inflated. There are no check engine lights or any indication that something is wrong. Ironically, I wanted and Expedition, but opted for Explorer for better economy.
I am on the verge of selling this vehicle because I can't afford how fast my fuel gauge drops to zero. (I have confirmed the mileage with the basic top off and divide mileage by gallons filled technique). Can anyone offer any advice on what I can look into that won't give me a check engine light? (The local dealer here told me exactly that, that they can't really do anything if there's no check engine light...) I know enough about cars to fix things when I need to. The above '91 Explorer has about 280,000 mi on it, with plenty of my own blood, sweat, and tears put into it.
Again, any info or advice is greatly appreciated.
P.S. Not going to put a magnet on my fuel line to "align" the fuel molecules...
