I was told by the dealer that the 05 4.0 dosen't have a DPFE. Though I had the P0401, I needed to figure out what the problem was.

I took off the egr valve and noticed it was hard to push the valve up. (All hoses/pipes were clear carbon, vacuum was good while running.) Took a little lube to it and it freed it up quite a bit. Hopefully this is the fix on my 104k flex truck. I cleared the code and I'll report back.

Didn't work.

is it possible the metal pipe where the egr is connected might be clogged and if so maybe you can rotor roote it so to speak if you use a bike brake cable and splay the end a bit almost like creating a brush and using a back and forth motion while spraying it with throttle body cleaner might help.

Good idea, I'll try that, I'm kinda not feeling it, but I'll try.

Ahhh, same code, same problem, same engine, same year, same mileage... replaced DPFE, no more problem or code... located behind TB on top of manifold...long arms can get to it easy, if no long arms get a step ladder... about $100 off the internet, if going to a stealership get a jar of vasoline ($$$)... DO NOT USE AFTERMARKET (experienced it) get a motorcraft...

Glad that you were able to resolve the problem. If you don't have one, I suggest you get a Haynes or Chilton manual since it's obvious your not afraid to get your hands dirty.

I'm lookin for it now.........

Easy can you be more specific?
I don't see one, all I see is a box on top of the EGR valve itself.

At the top rear of the engine. For the 4.0l it's more toward the passenger side. For the 4.6l it's more on the driver's side. This is from the 2003 WSM:

Looks pretty much like this except may not have the bracket on it:

Don't buy aftermarket, get a Ford Motorcraft part. Silverstatefordparts.com sold one to me last year for $51.45 shipped.

That's were my EGR valve is. I donr see a DPFE there at all.

When I go to Rock Auto.com, 04+ dosen't have a listing for a DPFE. Same with Silver State

Here's an 02-03 EGR

An 04-05, looks like an all in one type

I think you figured it out. Lol. I was just typing a new message to say that they might have integrated it into the EGR on the drive by wire setups. That's too bad as it looks more expensive to change now. Let us know if you replace it.

Rock Auto Motorcraft part $91, $6 shipping. Not bad.

I'm gonna order the two parts needed for the '97 too, (P0401, P0402)

Yesterday I put an EGR valve on, which on the 05 DBW houses all 3 components, 15 minute job. So far so good. All good on the 97 as well.
