- 2005 Explorer XLT
I bought a 2005 Explorer earlier this year. When I drove it, I noticed a “very slight” shift flare from 3rd to 4th gear. Wasn’t that bad. I started reading on this forum and saw all of the transmission issues. I never did find anything on a 3 to 4 shift flare. Anyway i changed the fluid and filter and that seemed to resolve the issue. The fluid level was probably a quart or more higher than it should have been.
It had been fine until late last week. I was coming home and heard a little noise...kind of a small pop and the o/d light started flashing shortly thereafter. I noticed when I stopped and took off again, when it went into second gear it almost came to a stop. I manually shifted it until I got home.
I couldn’t find much on this problem other than maybe the o/d band had broken. I did loosen the nut and did turn the adjustment screw in on the o/d band and it did tighten up. I backed it out 1.5 turns and locked it again. My question is can the band still be broken if it tightens up?
Could this be a valve body issue or solenoid issue? I did resistance test the solenoids and they are all within spec so it isn’t an electrical issue.
I’m not sure of anything else to try. We don’t have many trans shops in my area other than the big boys that are very expensive. Anyone have any suggestions on other things to try? It is a nice vehicle and doesn’t have much rust.
Sorry this is so winded, but wanted to give you some history. I believe the transmission is a 5R55S. Trans code on the sticker is V.
Thank you in advance!
Bob
