Hey guys,

I have a 2005 Explorer. About 40k on a rebuilt transmission. When driving about 40+ miles, I will get a transmission overheated warning. You can smell that the transmission has overheated when you park (Don't worry, I have parked it all 3 times this has came on) I took the car to a mechanic and he said that the transmission cooler was plugged and the radiator is leaking. He changed both of those, serviced it with new fluid and filter and sent me on my way. He said no serious issues with the ATF (it was red, no metal, etc). About 40 miles after the shop... "Transmission overheated". I park it, let it cool. Then take it back. He plugged the transmission codes and there was only a code for overheated. No incorrect gear ratio codes. He believes the solenoid pack is no regulating fluid properly and will need to be replaced. His computer is not capable of testing solenoids, so he asked me to schedule a diagnostic and not drive it anymore than necessary. I have scheduled the diagnostic, but do you guys agree with the solenoids or could I have something else on my hands. Let me also mention that the tranmission doesn't shudder, slip or make noises.

There is a built in mechanical thermo stat inside the transmission to regulate cooler flow. You can either leave it or jam it full open. Its up to the shop that rebuilds it. Sounds like the thermostat has failed

The diagnostic showed that the TFT was broken. He suggested a new solenoid pack. He said the TFT sends information to the PCM regarding the torque converter lock up and pressure solenoids. He said the Torque converter is probably not getting the signal to lock up and getting hot. He said rebuilding solenoids can be a shot in the dark to a new pack is the best option since Ford put them all in one in this transmission. I hope this fixes it!
