2005 explorer xlt 4.0 flex fuel runs like crap

I am having a problem with my explorer was out of town and on the way back it started to sputter and misfire then cleared up as we drove the closer I go to home the worse it got to the point it had no power to pull any hills we limped it home 5 miles per hour we hear a popping sound on drivers side sounds like exhaust leaking under intake any help will be greatly appreciated I replaced the fuel filter, but no better

check engine light its on at idle and flashes when driving it but it don't run well enough to get it auto parts store I don't have scanner

On board diagnostics (OBD-II) in the Maintenance and Specifications chapter. If the light is blinking,
engine misfire is occurring which could damage your catalytic converter. Drive in a moderate fashion
(avoid heavy acceleration and deceleration) and have your vehicle serviced immediately.

had some one scan it . it came up with driver side cat plugged so called ford they want 1700 for y pipe I was told by several ford guys and was told cant put universal cats on it will put up codes any help

Buy a Y-pipe on Rockauto.com and install it yourself in your driveway.

Problem solved.

with car running, but not super hot yet, bash and smash the cat with a heavy rubber hammer for a few mins.
