As anyone else had any issues with Axles and Hub Assemblies being seized together? Took my Explorer to the shop because both Tone Rings were cracked, and the mechanic soon realized he couldn't get the axle to separate from the hub assembly. He let it soak over the weekend (pb blaster or something similar) and then put it in a 20 ton press. Nothing worked, for either side. So now I have to replace everything in the rear end, except for the differential, to the tune of just under $2,000.

This brings me to a total of about $3,500 spent on this thing since i have owned it (just under 2 years). Luckily I was able to replace 2 radiators myself otherwise I might be around $5,000 by now. I think I may have to sell it now, this many problems for a 2006 with 50,000 miles is unacceptable.

Sounds like someone drove it through the ocean. :p: I can't say I've had the same problem.

Did he take a torch to it? If he knew the hub was a loss he could've destroyed even the outboard CV-joint boot by heat to get it off. And then just replace the boot...

i dont think he knows what he is doing......... i have seen these weld lock from people living on a beach and never had a problem.

as he took a 20 ton press..... idk something is definitely fishy....

Yeah...a 20 ton press can separate things that were never meant to be separated.

He took a torch to it, and it mushroomed the end of the axle. That was after it sat in the 20 ton press for almost 4 hours with the press maxed out. He called me up there to show me what he was running in to. I saw the assembly in the press, and he showed me the press was maxed out. I even tried to get another stroke out of the jack, but it wouldn't budge.

I know the guy pretty well, and he seems to be highly sought after by the local garages. However, now I am starting to have my concerns. I am going to take the other axle assembly (he said both sides were seized) and see if I can find a way to get it apart. If I do, I will make sure I get some money back.

as far as i know, i never pressed axles out with a press, since that will cause them to mushroom, my guess is he deiced on the face of the axle where the nut goes to use a hammer to bang them out. which started the problem.

i would say your best bet would probably goto a junk yard, get the assemblies, then just get new bearings and hubs and install that in the assemblies, but i would defiantly not trust the person who couldn't get an axle out....

also can we get a pic?

It's all about the proper application of force. But be careful with all that force being applied. If it slips the wrong way you can be hurt. Wear safety glasses and take your time.
