Hard to say. the 4.0 SOHC is known to have issues with the timing chains with higher miles. They'll need replacement before they break otherwise you can expect to put in a new motor.
Also, I am not completely sure, but I think the 5r55s transmission that was used in the 2006-2010 v6 trucks might still have the servo bore wear problem. Not too expensive to fix if it hasn't gotten bad, but something to consider. Look for funny shifting behavior and fault lights.
Also, radiator leaks are a common issue with the 2006-2010s, might check and see if this one has had the radiator replaced or serviced and whether it's currently leaking.
Plug a code scanner up to it and see if it has any stored fault codes.
Basically I think you're going to have to budget to have some things fixed before they break (and they will). If you're pretty mechanically inclined to do a lot of your own work then it won't be as bad. Talk the guy down some then it might be worthwhile. Otherwise I'd look for a newer one with the 4.6 V8.
Okay, thank you for that! I was going to have it be my main vehicle, some hauling here and there. Would you say i should try to find a different explorer? If so, what would you reccomend?
Without checking off any options, Edmunds.com says $6474 for private party sale in "Clean" condition. Changing to "Average condition (may have a few minor mechanical or cosmetic issues needing reconditioning), moves to $4535.
Unless there are a lot of high-end options on this (navigation, rear DVD, etc), $7000 is way too much. Get on Edmunds yourself, and evaluate based on actual options/condition. Don't try to low-ball a friend too much, if you want to keep the friendship. Print off the page and show it to him. $2000 is a lot to take off for condition, so in reality, you should probably settle somewhere between the 2 numbers. But that should be the basis for your negotiation.
Just as a comparison, I just paid $8500 for a 2006 V8 limited with 125k miles on it. I turned right around and spent $800 to reseal both intake manifolds. I knew that going in (well I knew about one side) It does not have all the Nav and Entertainment stuff which I am really just as glad of. Otherwise it has all the candy and everything works. I would say that the body and interior are about 97%.
When I bought my 06 v6 ex it bought it with 52,000 miles and paid $12k for it so that explorer has more then double miles I would deff get that price down
When it breaks, your friendship will be in jeopardy.
I usually try to avoid buying from people I know. Even though you know it's a used vehicle, when something major happens, you will be upset with your friend anyway, no matter what.
