Hello all, new guy here. I have owned many Fords, but never an explorer. Currently looking for an explorer for my wife as an upgrade from her '09 Fusion for more room.

I looked at a 2006 Explorer Limited last night with 89k miles. Was in really good shape, but the only thing that had me concerned was this condition.

On the test drive, I was not able to turn the O/D on or off while driving down the road. It would work in Park, but not in Drive. The O/D on/off did function correctly when I shifted it in Park and then drove again, but it would not shift while the gearshift was in Drive. I have searched and haven't been able to find any similar symptoms anywhere online, does anyone have any ideas?

I doubt it is indicative of any large problems. My first gut reaction is an intermittent connection in the cable that is moving with the gear shifter, that connects while in part, but disconnects when moved to drive, but I don't know what it looks like under the console or if that even makes sense.

If I recall properly, there was some that had issues with that button, but its is only serviced in a whole shifter assembly from Ford.

You can get the button separately, but not in an explorer. I forget which model used the same button, and if you order it, it is a direct replacement. There was a thread about it a few years back.

I bought a replacement for mine. I'll check tonight to see where I bought it and model number but I seem to recall finding it on ebay. New for less than $25.

*EDIT* Found on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-OEM-200...420175?hash=item3cd8a0464f:g:MCMAAOxyRNJSiPxR

The guy I am buying it from took it to his mechanic and had it fixed. We came to an agreed price and I am picking it up this afternoon. Turns out it was some circuit board under the shifter that wasn't properly communicating the location of the shifter, thus not allowing the O/D on/off switch to work only when it was in drive. Thanks for the help guys!
