Let me introduce myself, I'm a jeep cherokee guy(5 of them over the years), I currently own a 5.7 hemi with 330hp. I'm buying my wife an 06 explorer to drive my son around in, mainly because I like the space, safety options and ride and feel compared to my jeep. Explorer's are def. better family cars. The problem is I really just can't decide on the v8 6peed or v6. Typically I would just opt for the v8, but I'm thinking since I already have a hemi maybe this would be a good complement now that I am family guy to own a v6. What would you explorer finatics do? Can anybody reason to me that a 2006 ford explorer v6 performs very well compared to v8?

is the V8 engine ticking normal? I've noticed that on a couple of the used vehicles that I have looked at, mainly with 50Kish on them.

The V6 Ford Motor has plenty of punch. I just swapped from a Dakota with a 5.2 Magnum to a Sport trac with a 4.0 and I find the Ford V6 adequate. Of course for towing I prefer the Dodge but with the amount of towing I do (not much) I preferred the V6 for the MPG. With tweaks I have her up to 18MPG city. I take my son to school daily and I rarely did it with the Dakota as the MPG were low. Since your choice is a grocery getter/Mom-mobile I would go with the V6. Plenty of power better fuel economy.

There isn't any enjoyable difference in fuel economy. All things equal, you'll have better trade value later, virtually the same fuel economy, and more power. Get the V8.

Thanks for feedback. One thing bothering me is when buying used you never know what the former was doing with the car. For example, I looked at a v8, with 52K, the car drove nice, but the underneath had a ton of rust. The spare tire was completely rusted. I expect a little, but not that much. My 2006 cherokee is fairly clean from rust, then again I spray it after driving on beach. Most other 2006 explorers I have looked at have been fairly clean, but most are v6's, there aren't many v8's out there...

Do you guys think there is any truth to the v6 actually being lighter with the smaller motor, so it may maneuver a little easier around town?

To me that would be indicative of a boat being towed and launched in salt water. My friends truck was like that. Then again he never washed it down. He washed the boat & trailer but not the truck, why? because it was just the truck he used to to pull the boat & he put little importance on it, hence oil changes were not done on a 3 month schedule but evey 3k miles which could take a year. Whiich would mean the filters were rarely changed (hey the truck started and got him to the beach ramp)... So am I showing you the pattern?

My 2002 Sport Trac had 74,000 miles when I bought it from a Ford Dealer. It was a trade in. It was clean. All recalls addressed, all documentation present, all service records available.

For me, when buying used I use several steps for piece of mind.

1. I prefer new car dealers
2. I inspect the car (fluids, tires, hoses, belts, air filter) Usually a dealer will change these. What I do check is undercarrage, interior (not the obvious look at the edges, on the bottoms etc to see if the car has been scrubbed down.
3. I make sure the dealer will guarantee state inspection (not done by them)
4. I insist on a 100% warranty by the dealer for at minimum 1000 miles/ 1 month with an option for the extended warranty within 30 days.
5. Carfax report
6. Warm & Fuzzy (most important) If ANYTHING gives you a bad feeling (car or dealer), Walk Away. Don't compromise or accept reasons. There are more trucks out there.

Of course nothing will guarantee that the vehicle wasn't abused but it will minimize your risk.
