Is it possible to install a upper console (the one with direction and outside temperature) from a 97 ford explorer into a 2006 ranger? or is there a different console I should look for

This is a good basic write up. There are slightly different color codes for 2004~2006 and these are noted at the end of page 4. However, you won't find the gray/black wire at the SJB in 2006 because it was eliminated after this was written. An alternate GY/BK location that you can use for your 2006 is in the wire bundle near the parking brake pedal.
