When I first start out in the morning (or later in the day if my Explorer has been setting for a while) two things happen. First I can see the temperature gauge spike from normal range to red in less than 15 seconds. At the same time it seems as if the transmission is slipping (RPM's go up and the engine sounds like it is over reving). I just keep the pedal to the metal for 10 to 15 seconds then everything goes back to normal. Instantly the temperature drops and the car drives 100% normally. Anyone have any ideas?

No diagnostic trouble codes or warning lights?

Sound familiar. Mine just starting doing something similiar. What did you find out?

I'd bet you are low on coolant and it is the radiator fan going into full lock up mode and that's what you hear. The temp gauges are basically idiot lights... They stay at a normal reading until overheated, then rapidly swing up to full hot. Then after the fan roars away for a bit, the temp drops and the fan gets quiet again

Does the heat/ defrost help at all? Is the an easy way to replace fan to heat and defrost near dash
