I've found some good information on this site in particular regarding towing in overdrive but it seems that the answer depends quite a bit on the year and engine among other things. I don't want to blow up the ride since it has been good and taken me places in the mountains I probably shouldn't have gone in the first place. So here goes, hopefully I'll get a good answer.
I'm moving from CO to IN and expect to be towing a 6'x12' U-Haul cargo trailer about 1,000miles one way. It will be mostly flat land with occasional hills which I expect to shift out of O/D on hills based on what I've already read here. As far as expected weight goes I'm not 100% sure but most of the stuff I am moving is going to take up more space than be heavy. I'm selling pretty much all of my furniture so the heaviest item is likely to be myself and some dishes. Wind drag etc has an effect though I'm sure. I would be surprised if all the crap in the trailer exceeds 1,500lbs.
The vehicle:
2006 Explorer XLT V8 4.6L with stock towing package (class II receiver) & advance track/roll stability control as well as rear climate control (apparently that has an impact on towing according to the factory guide). I purchased the vehicle with about 6,000 miles but have not changed the transmission fluid yet, about 70K miles now. I'm curious if that would have any impact as well and if I should get that changed beforehand and if using O/D towing is going to have an impact on that decision. With all that said any recommendations on top of whether or not to use O/D it would be helpful if anyone has advice on a top speed. I expect to be in 70-75MPH zones for most of the trip but am willing to slow it down if that means not experiencing an epic FAIL.
