So the wife was backing out of the garage and....well you probably know what happened next. Anyway, she stopped the car before it hit the end of the break away pivot, but the mirror glass itself is cracked.

I got home and it was very loose so I pulled it off. Turns out the little white jack screws were the only thing holding it on. The screws had pulled out of the motor housing and stayed on the back of the mirror (little ball ends pop into the back of the mirror). So far, so good, only need to replace the glass. So I took the mount off the back of the mirror and put it back on the truck to test. When I put it back on and used the adjustment in the truck, it adjusted fine, but then fell out. After closer inspection, I noticed there is a T shaped piece of plastic that is on the center of the motor cover that seems to fit into the center of the mirror mount. I assume this is the "pivot point" for the thing and keeps it attached to the motor while the screws move it around. I went to ford and it's $50 for the heated mirror and another $30 for the motor (can't just get the cover). I have them on order, but I'm not totally sure I have this assembly figured out.

On the motor cover, on the upper left, there is a hinged bar that will swing out towards the mirror. It was lying flat when I opened it up. It's not spring loaded or anything and I can't seem to find a place on the mirror mount for it to attach to. Also, if you swing it out toward the mirror it will then come out of the little grove it's hinged in.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I assume many of the newer trucks have similar mounting systems. A search on the net just finds lots of posts about replacing the whole housing, not much on just fixing the guts (I guess not many partially damage the mirror, it's either gone or not).

Thanks for the help.

Sorry Jeeden, I have not messed with the mirrors quite yet... we might have to wait for my wife to back out of the garage.

Well, just to complete the thread, here is the answer. I picked up the mirror from ford and the motor. The motor came with all the additional "layers" of mounting on top of the cover already.

All that was required was to disconnect the motor wires, remote the motor block with the 4 torx screws, then put the new one in. Then connect the wires for heating to the mirror and snap the mirror on the motor. I was very careful not to flex the mirror when pushing it on, but also very careful to make sure all the tabs snapped on, they are very stiff and I was afraid the mirror would come off on the highway if I didn't make sure every tab was secure.

In a nut shell, you can replace the mirror, motor (which is really everything inside the housing) for $90.

Any advice on how to pop the mirror and motor out of the housing?

Ha, never thought to search for service manuals. Thank you so much! I know it's annoying when people just ask for ****... I honestly did dig around. I appreciate your kindess

I've just replaced the complete mirror at the passenger side because of a broken case.
Maybe these pics can help you.

Thank you for the pics!!

My problem is that one of the axis is no longer working, nor is the heating element (not that big a deal). These pics will definitely help. Thank you!
