Well...that was nerve-racking. I had a couple that were really tight and one that I had to use some PB Blaster on, as water got in the plug well and it was tight! Almost stripped that one out and had to break out the 1/2" ratchet to get it started.

I followed the Ford TSB procedure and used one of my smaller 3/8" ratchets. Took my time and when one got tight, I turned it back clockwise and kept working back and forth until it was loose. The PB Blaster plug did not make the creaking/snapping noises so I thought I was losing that battle, but the lube must have worked better than the carb cleaner as there were no issues. I figured that as long as I was hearing bad screeching that things were going OK. :) Who knows what would have happened if I did not use carb cleaner.

Took it for a test drive to clear out the remaining smoke and there was a noticeable difference in throttle response. Looking at these pictures, I wonder how it wasn't a lot worse. 97,000 miles.

I decided against the impact method.
