2008 Ford Explorer
Hello All, I'm new here. I have a 2008 Ford Explorer, 110,000 miles. It just recently started making a very loud noise while driving that simulates a semi truck when it starts accelerating. The noise is intermittent at this point and doesn't seem to affect the driving at all. The RPM's don't change. We just had transmission flush and oil change. It's very worrisome. Any ideas?

Could you record the sound in a video or audio file so we can hear it for ourselves? It's very hard to determine what the issue is otherwise.

Will try Rick, trouble is is its intermittent and you don't know when its coming and it doesn't last long. Sounds just like a semi tractor trailer when its accelerating from a dead stop.

Are you talking about the infamous roaring sound of a fan clutch like an airplane taking off? It usually does when the ambient temp is above 40 deg celcius. Previous post here says it could be fan clutch going bad but they didnt post any update of the fix.

Thanks Fritz24. We will have that checked out. 99% of time, it has happened after the car is warm. A couple of times it has happened when the car was started first thing in morning. Whatever it ends up being, I will post results here.

One way to confirm the roaring sound of the fan clutch is to drive the car with the ac off. If you can't duplicate the sound then it is the fan clutch that is making the noise. Im not sure if the fan clutch is bad unless confirmed by any mechanic member here in the forum.

Thank you Fritz 24 and Rick. Replaced the fan clutch and the problem seems to be solved.:)
