Hello everyone! I am the new owner of a 2008 Explorer XLT eddie Bauer edition (v6). I bought it about a month ago from a family member to tow my small food trailer. The food trailer itself is under 2,000 pounds, which I assumed would be perfectly fine to tow, as we've towed it with a 4 cylinder before. (Note its got about 161k miles on it). This past week we took the trailer to an event about 45 minutes from us and about halfway into the drive a loud roaring sound came from under the hood, we discovered it was the secondary fan. As we are in florida and its been HOT we assumed the car was getting hot so we pulled over to let it cool. Unfortunately, when we got back on the road again it was still on and it got to the point where we were unable to shift above the 3rd gear, it would make a high pitched squeal and almost a grinding sound, but only when it was above 3rd gear. After it would stop us shifting past 3rd, we couldn't keep speed with the road so we would be forced to pull over. We were able to get to the event and back home but we are avoiding towing again until we can solve this issue. The gauges for the engine temp showed it was fine the whole ride and it continued when our AC was turned off as well. I have seen this issue posted before but none when someone was towing. As this is the vehicle to tow our living, its important to know if we need a new vehicle or if its a quick fix. Any help is appreciated as we've never owned an explorer before.

A third Gen explorer with 160k would not be my choice of vehicle to make a living with.

Your issue is unlikely to be something very simple, or easily pinpointed on a forum.

I don’t think you have a transmission dipstick. I’d want to know the condition of the fluid since it was failing to shift.

Did the check engine light ever come on?

Engine light has never come on. We're gonna see if a code pops up but from what I've read it most likely wont.
