2011 with 198000 miles

Can you share pictures of the rusty front subframe?

I have seen the subframe body mounts crack on some explorers. Its more of a stress/age issue than rust.

I live in the rust belt... My front subframe is very clean however the rear subframe factory undercoating is all peeling and starting rust underneath. It will get fully sanded and treated next year. This does not seem to be common from my research on 5th gen rust issues.

Ive also seen the control arm bushings crack and bind to the point of rubbing metal on metal. The suspension is a weak point on these cars IMO.

Also, the PTU and waterpump are most notorious as already mentioned. You may have your hands full real soon if none of those have been serviced at that mileage.

My 2011 (front wheel drive) is at 330000 miles, and is still going strong, I had to replace the front struts and bushings. At 200000 miles I had a preemptive water pump replacement done. And while in there they replaced the timing chain, guides, oil pump and front crank seal

I followed the manual regarding the transmission and had had a transmission flush done, at 150000 miles, except it wasn’t done, All they did was a drain and fill, Once I learned I didn’t get what I expected I’ve been doing a drain and fill myself every 10000 miles and I send a sample to blackstone labs, The wear metals concentrations have been coming down and this last sample had a tinge of red to it (yea)

I have to make a decision soon. Do I replace the water pump again or do I just drive it until it fails. I’m leaning to a replacement and push this thing to 500000 miles

It’s a Florida car so no rust (except the hood) and no potholes so I’m easy on the suspension

Thats awesome! GlAd to see how far youve made it, i am encouraged to do all that extra maintenance and just see how far out it will last. Since I got it new id rather put the maintenance into it and keep it til its done completeley.

All that maintenance will still be less than a new car At least that’s the way I think

Way less, since the new Explorer ST and limited run 50k n up. Glad I got my 19 limited with 28k miles from Vroom last year for 28.4k, no way would I pay 40k or more for it new. With my down payment I financed 18k for 4 yrs.

Let the first guy take the big hit.

All that maintenance will be less than 3-4 car payments. :)

Back in the early 1990s I finally listened to my father's advice about buying new vehicles. I haven't had a car payment since. However, I do encourage people to buy lots of new vehicles. What they buy today is what I will be driving tomorrow. ;)

At 10 years and 330,000 miles?

I just got out some sandpaper and paint
There is nothing indicating a time or mileage limit on the hood replacement.

Peter

So you think the dealer will replace my hood?
If you read the TSB I linked, you will see there don't appear to be any limitations. The only issue now might be the fact that you attempted to repair it yourself.

Questions about mileage, options, value, oil changes….

IF the subframe is so rusted that it needs to be replaced, is the vehicle safe? I do not know the answer to this question.

But the first priority is to be safe.

I'm just curious as my ex is just 50,000 miles behind yours; have you noticed any declining fuel economy or any blow by yet? I installed a catch can at 200,000 that's plumbed in with both valve covers. I get about an ounce of oil every 4k miles.

IMO, an ounce every 4k miles is pretty darn good. Especially considering the miles on it.

No blow by.

I dont pay a lot of attention to mileage. But I dont think its changed much over time
