After much persistence, the service dept mgr ended up driving & inspecting my car himself. There was a damaged bushing that was affecting the transmission, causing the rough shifting, etc. They replaced the bushing, but also had to reset the vehicle's "memory", which they explained essentially "learns" the driver's driving habits (breaking, acceleration, etc...) and anticipates/conforms to those habits. Hence, the "memory" essentially "learned" to shift roughly and needed to be reset back to factory settings once bushing was replaced. My Explorer has been driving fine since. I'm sensitive to how it runs & hope I don't notice anything else!
