Hey everyone,

New to this forum but not to forums in general. I have a major problem going on with my 2013 explorer 6 cylinder. The engine cuts off for no reason. I have had it in the shop twice and they say there is nothing coming up but " steering failure" codes. It happened once more today. I took it straight to the dealer once again. This time the engine caught itself and no power steering to boot! It's amazingly hard to steer, more so than my F350 diesel without power steering, (lost the belt while in the woods). So they read the error codes once again and state that the rack and pinion steering needs replacement. I say to them, " if you turn off the key and restart the engine the steering will work fine!" The technician did and sure enough the steering was back as well. I have never seen such a problem as this, has anyone else?
Here it is again:

Engine cuts off while driving. Once restarted (done while coasting in neutral so far 3 times)power steering doesnt work but engine runs and everything else works fine. If you put car in park, remove key, restart engine, power steering will work along with everything else.

this has huge potential for serious injury since this is my wifes' car and she has my child with her at times. I refused to drive the car again and are now waiting for a "black box" to be installed and tested again. I told them they could drive to florida and back, im not driving that car until they have a fix of some sort. Someone is going to get hurt bad. The problem happenes about every 2 days or so. Anyone have any ideas? COuld the " bad rack and pinion steering" really cause the engine to quit like that?

Welcome to the Forum GOT MUK?. :wavey:
If you use the Forum's 'Search' function, you will see that there is a rather extensive thread on the steering failure issue. However, I do recall any of them reporting the engine cutting out. It is also quite common for the steering to come back after a restart. As indicated in the thread, it is a good idea to fill out the form to report the problem to the NHTSA since Ford does not believe it is a safety issue.
Here is the link to the thread and also to the NHTSA form;

Good luck.

I had a similar issue once where the electricity all cut off once for 1 or 2 seconds and the engine like almost died out and then the engine just came back on again. We lost power steering momentarily and it was so scary. When my APIM short circuited, that happened.

I suggest you leave it at the dealer and ask them for a rental until they figure things out.
