On both sides of my windshield, the plastic trim piece is crack and allowing water into the front floorboards. Im wondering if theres anything i need to be aware of in replacing these two pieces. It seems like a very simple repair, but everytime i go to do any repairs on my explorer it ends up being more complicated than expected and now in a little nervous to work on my car myself. As a teenager i fixed everything on my cars but cars were different back in the 70's & 80's. Can anyone give me am idea of what the two strips of trim will cost me and if theres anything i should know. Thank you, and i love this website 👍

Pictures might help us understand what has happened.

The trim pieces may be cracked but they aren't what seals the windshield, or are only the outer portion depending on what you're referring to. The right way to fix this is have an autoglass shop take the windshield out, do some cleanup and put it back in with a new seal. You could possibly DIY if you learn the technique. There's probably youtube videos.

I noticed last summer you posted "My explorer has a identical rock chip that ended up with the samecrack as yours. I had a good glass repairman look at it and he said no, no way. But if I'm wrong, I'd love to here about it cuz a new windshield is awful pricey."

Do you need a new windshield? If it's a 2013 Explorer, I'd assume you would have insurance on it and they should cover the replacement cost. If you have already had the windshield replaced and it's leaking this soon after, I'd take it back to the place that replaced the windshield and see what you can work out as it shouldn't be leaking again this soon, if ever. See if the work had any warranty.

As mentioned the plastic trim pieces don't prevent water from entering the vehicle. Also, a picture would help. One thing that will allow water to pool in the footwells is blocked moonroof drain tubes. Do you have a moonroof?
