Welcome to the Forum.
Have you tried the liftgate reset procedure as outlined in your Owner's Manual? It may not resolve the issue but it is one more thing to try.

Peter

I have a 2014 Explorer Limited.
Power tailgate goes up but it will not come down. When the tailgate is fully opened and you activate the switch to go down, it behaves like it wants to go up some more but it is fully open. I do not hear any chimes when trying to close and the door freely closes manually. I tried replacing the actuator with the same results.
I also tried the reset procedure. Any guidance is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I wonder if it could be the support strut although the fact that there are no chimes is odd. Try setting the liftgate height to perhaps only 1/2 open and then manually close the gate and then see if it will open AND close.

The gate moves up and down freely with the power strut removed so I'm reasonably sure it's not the support strut.
I set the liftgate height to 1/2 but get the same behavior...the gate acts jerks up a hair with no chime and won't co.e down. Weird, right?

Perhaps the motor isn't getting any signal on the 'down' circuit. I don't know if you can test that with a meter.

Do you mean the power actuator when you say motor?

There is a movement when the hatch is open except it acts like it wants to continue upward...it jerks upwards a bit rather than coming down. The new actuator behaved exactly the same.

There is a lift gate module. May have codes in it. You will need a scan tool that can read ALL modules, not something that "Autozone" will do, Or you will need Forscan, which will read all the modules.

Thank you, I will look for Forscan. Is it available as a free download anywhere?

Here's the cable I bought Amazon.com

And you have to get a license. There's a learning curve, so watch some YT videos on how to get going with it.

I checked for the liftgate module and for some reason it is called a striker plate screw but it does seem to be the module.
If ordering, Levittown, a forum vendor, will provide a 50% discount on shipping.

That is one Funky Screw :)

2016 to 2019 its called a "Control Module" Got to love Ford.

Another thing I should mention is I can't disable "Power Tailgate" from the dash. The gate will still open with remote or dash button.

I believe that is normal. You're only disabling the ability to use the dash button, not the other feature.
