2014 Ford Explorer XLT
Have a 2014 Explorer. On my girlfriends trip, about 1 1/2 hours in the ABS, light came on and the Service Advance Trac and Power Steering Fault message came on. It freaked her out so she pulled over at a gas station, turned the vehicle off and turned it back on. Message then said all the same except "Power Steering Loss". She had it towed to the nearest Ford Dealership and they told her it was the Rack and Pinon so she agreed to have it changed out for $2,000 dollars. After a couple of days, she picks up the vehicle and 30 minuets into driving it all the same error lights and messages came back on. So she kept driving it home. Next day we had it taken to a local Ford dealer where they read the codes and came up with a P07AE code. They reset it, drove it around for a few days and no issue came about. She picked it up and the next day after driving it down the highway, all the same stuff came back on. So she had it towed back to the original dealership that changed the rack and pinon. They stated the vehicle arrived to them in perfect driving condition and that no codes, warning lamps or warning messages were present (which when it left us the Power Steering Loss Message was on). After 3 weeks they told us to come pick up the vehicle claiming that there is no faults with it in which I told them there was a problem that they needed to fix it. So I took off of work one day, went there, drove the vehicle for them and had the ABS, Service Advance Trac and Power Steering Fault message come on. They then rescanned the vehicle and came up with some codes that didn't mark but stated as "Communication Faults". 4 days later they said the vehicle was ready and that it was due to "Low Tire Pressure of 2 pounds from normal". So when driving it back, of course 45 minuets later I am stuck with an ABS, Service Advance Trac and Power Steering loss again. To make this short as possible, the dealership told me that this isn't their problem or responsibility to take it some where else, made a claim with Ford Corp and they basically said I was S.O.L if I take it somewhere else. So still fighting that battle.

I was able to scan the vehicle with a phone app and got codes C1B00, U0131, U0140, U0100, U0121, U0131, U0140, U0151, U0154, U0159 and U0212 which are all saying "Inactive" currently and all those codes are basically "No Communications" with the modules. I deleted the codes, reset the system which took away the ABS, Service Advance Trac and Power Steering Fauly/Loss messages.

I am currently using my laptop hooked up to the vehicle and monitoring the steering angle sensor data with the PSCM using ForScan to see what happens when the problem occurs again. As of right now, the only message I have gotten is that the PSCM stated it received incorrect data from the ABS module in regards to the Steering Wheel Angle Sensor. I will be driving it this weekend to see if I can get the fault messages to come on and to see what ForScan says they are.

I have checked voltage on the DLC connect and have 12 volts between pin 16 and 4/5, I have 2.1 volts on pin 14 and 2.7 volts on pin 6. There is 61 ohms of resistance between pins 6 and 14.

I do plan on checking this weekend the wiring harnesses to see if there is any nicks or cuts which could be causing a short or ground on the CAN bus since I had all those communication codes.

Problem only seems to occur when driving the vehicle down the highway. Problem does not come on when driving it around town or in stop and go traffic (been doing that all week with it).

My question is, has anyone ran into this issue before? Could it possibly be a bad module that intermits randomly for a second which would cause the power steering fault, ABS and service advance trac to come on?

Also my alignment is off by 8 degrees when they changed the rack and pinon which it wasn't off prior to them changing it. When the steering wheel is dead center, it says it 0 degrees, but to go straight down the road I gotta hold it 8 degrees off center.

Welcome to the Forum.
Did you ever get a Recall notice for the power steering issue? It seems that they may have 'fixed' an issue that wasn't the problem. See this on the steering gear; 2011 - 2018 Explorer Power Steering Issue
It does seem that there appears to be an intermittent communications failure issue.

Hi Peter and thank you for the welcome. Unfortunately no we never got a recall notice for the 2014 year model isn't covered under the recall. Which it is strange that it skipped that year model. I feel like the service department saw the "Power Steering Loss" message and just assumed it was the rack and pinion since Explorers experience that common problem. Now I honestly truly believe that it is a complete communication failure for a brief second that is causing my issue. Just pin pointing it down is gonna be the hardest part since I can't find anywhere of there being a common problem on the CAN Bus with Explorers of this year range. I did however tonight get a new code in memory U0253 which is "Lost Communication with APIM Module" for a brief moment for the MyTouch started cycling in a loop of showing "Sync" and then showing the Ford logo constantly. Never had that happen before so i hope its not a brand new problem, but that issue only lasted 5 minuets and the MyTouch is working fine now without me resetting, rebooting or checking anything.

PS: Are those Keeshonds in your picture?

It is a common problem in Fords. I had a 2014 Ford Flex. My daughter was driving the car and those same warnings came on and all of a sudden the steering locked up. Thank God she had pulled up to an ATM here in town and not on the Interstate like she was earlier. We had it towed to a Ford dealership, they said it was the rack and pinion. It would cost $2700 in parts and labor. I didnt have the money so I sold it to them and applied it to another car. I couldn't afford a brand new one so I got a used Explorer. It had 65,000 miles on it. I took a road trip to Minneapolis to pick up my son and on the way home in Chicago, i got the same warnings and the steering locked up. Long story short, the mechanic where the car was towed to said it was the rack and pinion. I had to have it towed to a Ford dealership in order for it to be covered. Ford says its a steering sensor. The part is on back order and my car is still sitting in Chicago 6 weeks later. I live in North Carolina. I have read too many problems about the same issue. My kids drive the car. Any of us could have been killed with the steering locking up. Thankfully i was at a traffic light and was able to pull over. Lesson learned, I will not buy a Ford again...

P.S. I had problems with the car from the get go. I had just purchased it in October and half the time was spent back and forth to the dealership and the other half has been spent sitting in Chicago. I havent even told you half the story! I made enough stink and found the owner of the dealership where I got the car and he is willing to work with me with a solution to make it right. I dont know what that will be yet but I know people havent been that lucky and get the run around. Tell your girlfriend to get rid of that car before she gets killed!!

For some members that have had many of those warnings come on it was due to a bad wheel speed sensor but this seems to go beyond that.

I have the same exact problem. Except, I serviced the recall for my Explorer 2016 for a rear toe link fix. Then the exact same thing happened. I called the dealer and they told me it wasn't under recall and it had nothing to do with it. My mechanic also changed the rack and pinion, but it was fine for only one day. All other messages also appeared and back to my mechanic it is. But, I'm afraid it'll be a wild goose chase and we're looking at the wrong fix. Maybe it should be a recall as previous years with the exact same thing?

As the recall stated, it was only for a select number of vehicles. BTW, recalls should always by the dealership so that they can track and update the vehicle's records so the recall notice can be removed form it.

Hi there, i am experiencing the same issues here, have you ever find a solution for it? Thanks

For now, the reprogram or reset seems to work. But, I am told by a AAA Auto shop in Las Vegas (where I was left stranded) that it will most likely happen again and suggested that I take it to a Ford dealer. An appointment was given but not for another week. So, I risked driving back home to California.
I made it. But, the dealer suggested that I bring it back when it happens again.
Go figure.
I suggest we all report this annoying and dangerous conditions to
NHTSA 888-327-4236 or email

Those with issues that proved to be the steering rack found that the software update did not work. There are a few posts on that here. Eventually, they ended up replacing the steering rack.

I'm having that same issue right now
And what was the Maine issue then or do you know and what can I do now to fix it
