2016 Ford Explorer Sport TPMS Part#

TPMS35 F2GZ-1A189-A (4) Tire Pressure Sensors 2015-16 Ford F-150 Edge Mustang

But it works on 2017 Explorers too. Exact same part.
I'm doing this on our new explorer sport 2017.
I bought stock explorer 18" rims. Will these fit the 18"s? And do I need a programmer for my own Tue swaps? Or do they self program.

I believe they will work. Unfortunately all my invoice shows is TPMS 35 kit.

Unlike pre 2016 Explorers, they will have to be trained every time you switch the wheels since they are recognized as being in the position where they are trained.

Yes it does. I put these in my 18" winters. I can't imagine TMPS not working in any sized tire (the innards of the valve stem which is the same size for all tires). Also yes on the trainer. I bought mine from the dealer, but haven't used it yet -- will try when I switch it out in the spring.

I believe it was the Fordparts site I was looking at and there was a TPMS that was listed as being for a 17" wheel.

2017 Explorers do NOT need the TPMS training device. I bought one through the dealer after they confirmed I needed one while I got my winters installed. I put my summers back on this weekend on my own, and I didn't have to retrain. The computer remembers both sets. I also made sure it wasn't detecting my winters in my shed. I drove to work and topped up my air on the way to work. My summers were down to about 32.

So next time I visit the dealer, I'll get a refund on the part.

Did you drive more than 20 miles since you changed over? Just curious because that is what it took to get a TPMS alarm on mine when I drove without the proper sensors.

No, but I should be close to that. I'll cross that threshold today on my way home. I did fill air at a gas station -- all my tires were 31-32, and after I was finished they were all 35. I had one that was over, so I let air out, and it updated correctly on the correct tire. So that rules out tire rotation issues. I was looking at the display with the car running. The gauge on the compressor was pretty crude. I think Ford has bullet proofed this on these cars, far exceeding my expectations. But the Ford techs last fall told me I needed the training tool.

It seemed to pick up the changed tires immediately after switching, but I couldn't be certain until I left my driveway (tires are literally 5 feet away from my hood), so I was thinking they might still be communicating.

This isn't quite clear to me. You had the summers back on and they were remembered. However, how did you train the winters in the first place? I am about to get my winters (for next year) and will be mounting them and throwing them on to make sure everything is good to go next year. Won't I need the trainer to pair them the first time?

Unclear. It's possible they might need an initial training. I had the dealer install them for me.

But basically what I'm saying is I took my winters off, put my summers on with rotation and everything is perfect with no need to retrain. It's possible you might not need to train them at all, but I can't answer that question. Best bet would be to try it and see what happens.

Ok. Well I got the trainer so I'll give it a go and see what happens without training first.

If the dealer installed them initially then they would have used their training tool. I watched them do mine. They also did it again when the wheels were switched over a few weeks ago. It's part of the service when they change them. I think it takes less than a minute to do all 4.
